First of all, as always, thank you to A Forest of Stars for giving me permission to write this introduction.
As the Readers of this Blog most know by now, I'am often on Spotify and switch through so many Artists. And in this Sence i found also A Forest of Stars!
Since I personally really like listening to symphonic / power / speed metal, it was pretty easy for me to get into this band because their genre is avant-garde / progressive black metal. It didn't always feel difficult to listen to for me, as is unfortunately the case with some genres.
The Line-Up is as Such
Mr. T.S. Kettleburner [Bass (2007-2011), Vocals, Guitars (2007-2011, 2013-present)]
The Gentleman [Drums (2007-2008), Keyboards, Pianoforte, Percussion (2007-present)]
Mister Curse [Vocals (2007-present)]
Katheryne, Queen of the Ghosts [Vocals, Violin, Flute (2007-present)]
Mr. John "The Resurrectionist" Bishop [Drums, Percussion (2009-present)]
Mr. Titus Lungbutter [Bass (2011-present)]
Mr. William Wight-Barrow [Guitars (2014-present)]
We had the honor of having The Gentleman, the Keyboardist of the band, answer our questions. In January 22nd, 2008 the band released their first full-length album The Corpse of Rebirth.
1. God (16:27)
2. Female (13:57)
3. Male (13:04)
4. Earth and Matter (09:40)
5. Microcosm (10:27)
Full-Length Playtime: 01:03:35
Of course we couldn’t resist asking our questions! The Gentleman answered everyone of them in the most honest way imaginable.
Ceyla: "Is there any band that inspires you the most? Or, if there isn’t such a band, where do you draw your inspiration from? If neither applies, how did you come up with these two sub-genres, if you can still call them that?"
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
T.G: "To be honest, there are so many bands that we are collectively inspired by that it’s hard to know where to start cataloging them. And in the 17 or so years we’ve been going (so far), we’ve only added extensively to that list. So… casting my mind back to when we started out, the main influences at the time were: Blut Aus Nord, Deathspell Omega, Emperor, In The Woods…, Ved Buens Ende, Arcturus, Ulver, Burzum, that era of bands in the more experimental BM mold. But at the same time there were plenty of other bands of equal weight too: Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Type O Negative, Bauhaus, Swans, Legendary Pink Dots, Steeleye Span, Coil, GGFH and… I could probably go on forever, so I’ll stop now."
We can confirm that you can detect some influences from the Bands mentioned if you listen closely. All these different structures come together in a unique melody that one can only guess at in their songs.
Black Metal, at least from what I've heard, is for people who hear a deeper meaning in music. And I think that applies here too.
In June 2010, or rather on the 1st of the month, the group once again honored their fans with a magnificent album called Opportunistic Thieves of Spring.
1. Sorrow's Impetus (13:01)
2. Raven's Eye View (09:23)
3. Summertide's Approach (13:27)
4. Thunder's Cannonade (08:01)
5. Starfire's Memory (11:50)
6. Delay's Progression (16:28)
Full-Length Playtime: 01:12:10
Of course, there was also the question of the festivals.
Ceyla: "Are there any festivals or events in Germany, or even worldwide, that you would like to attend? Some of them always offer opportunities to apply."
Everyone has different ideas about which events they might be suitable for, so we are always curious to see what the answer will be.
T.G: "We always like the little, quirky, interesting places to play, rather than large events; not that we haven’t played our fair share of the latter. But the smaller gatherings, where you can meet everyone and it’s a labour of love, those are the types of thing we love the most. We played FunkenFlug in Austria (in the literal alpine mountains) years ago, it’s no longer going, but they hold other events there, so I’d like to say that would be one I’d like to play again, if it ever returned to existence and they’d have us back. It was such a special gig, and we were made so wonderfully welcome, a real passionate team of people who were doing it for the love of music above all else. That’s the sort of gig we enjoy."
We can only agree, you don't necessarily have to go to big festivals even if they attract the most attention. Maybe one day we will be lucky and be able to welcome them to our region.
We now try to include the complete discography in these presentations to make the search easier.
[2012.07.20] A Shadowplay for Yesterdays (Album)
[2015.02.27] Beware the Sword You Cannot See (Album)
Of course, we always give artists and musicians the option to leave a message for the readers. These messages are always very heartwarming, even if you shouldn't mention them in metal. And yet, they are all absolutely lovely people.
Ceyla: "Is there anything you would like the readers of this blog to know about you and your music?"
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
T.G: "Hmm, I’m not sure to be honest. There’s a lot of power in being given an open platform and I’m not certain it’s a good idea to give me that power. Enjoy music for the sake of music; playing, listening to it, making it. Eat your greens, stay in school, listen to your elders (or actually, don’t in some cases), read lots of books (I’m not a snob, digital or audio books are fine, but part of the attraction is spending time away from a screen), go for walks and switch off from the world. Most importantly, don’t listen to me, I don’t know anything, use your own judgement and do what you want to do!"
All named artists, as well as festivals and the entire discography, are linked throughout the article!
